The Junkie next door

I watched A&E's "The Junkie next door" this afternoon. I have to say that A&E is doing a service in showing the sadness and tragedy of the "junkie" lifestyle. I've also watched their interventtion series which does the same with addicts and alcoholics.

However, I have not yet seen one person on the A&E series who has an understanding of Addiction or Alcoholism. They have no idea what causes it and they have no idea what the solution is.

Today's show focused on methadone, and Naltrexone as treatments (Stupid treatments by the way). There was absolutely no discusssion of what causes addiction. The closest they came was when they mentioned that 70% of the women using heroin had been sexually abused as youngsters.

They also threw out the statistic that 75% of addicts relapse within 1 year. That is the state of the current treatment in America today.

You would think that after 30 years of being off heroin somebody might be inclined to listen to what I have to say on the subject. After all. Im doing what they say few are able to do. But the fact is hardly anybody listens to me.

The program today ended with a mother of a heroin addict saying that her support group tells her not to blame herself. Shes says its hard.

The truth of the matter is that if you have a kid on drugs, it is your fault. But of course its not acceptable to say that. Read "Hate: The root of Addiction" on this website if you want to understand what I mean when I say that.

Oh well, maybe someone will wander by and believe I know what Im talking about.
