Allergic reactions to alcohol rare

There are a large number of Americans who believe, falsely, that Alcoholism is a disease. It is an idea that has been popularized by AA. Americans are less aware of the nuances of this teaching within AA.
One of the basic teaching texts of AA is the book 12&12 written by Bill Wilson. Alcoholics Anonymous has step study meetings throughout the United States and the world where this idea is taught to people. Here is what the 12&12 teaches and what the majority of AA's believe:
Our spnosors pointed out our increasing sensitivity to alcohol---an allergy, they called it. First we were smitten by an insane urge that condemned us to go on drinking, and then by an allergy of the body that insured we would ultimately destroy ourselves in the process." -12&12 p.22
This idea is taught to this day. Considering the lost confused state people are in when they come to AA it is not surprising that many believe it.
What difference does it make?
It makes all the difference in the world.
Is the alcoholic a "sick" person or is he evil?
The person who sees he is evil can see his need for repentance and salvation. The person with an "allergy" cant.
