Ted W. is right on in presenting a letter from A.A. archivist Frank Mauser (now deceased)regarding the propriety of the Bible in A.A. I knew Frank very well, and I find that when he was writing letters on behalf of A.A., he told it like it was, not like some controlling force at GSO might have liked it to be. Of course, the Bible can be read, discussed, placed on literature tables, and written about in A.A. and its meetings. During Frank's tenure, there was a Box 459 article which purported to state the A.A. view and said there was no such thing as conference "dis-approved" literature and cited the Bible as one example. In fact, with Frank present at our Marin County, Califoria meeting in early 1990's, we presented portions from the Big Book, the Bible, the Oxford Group, Anne Smith's Journal, and other specific but little known sources of the original A.A. program. Since that time, A.A. history meetings have been held in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Vermont, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Florida, Arizona, Oregon, and certainly at Archives 2000 at the International A.A. Convention in Minneapolis. In early A.A., the Book of James, Jesus's Sermon on the Mount, and 1 Corinthians were discussed, mentioned, the topic of meetings, and frequently read at meetings by Dr. Bob and his wife Anne Smith. How then did A.A. get so far adrift and so fearful of God, the Bible, church, and religion to call these "outside issues" and start condemning those who mentioned them. The objections are without foundation and contrary to A.A. history, as Frank Mauser so frequently made clear to me personally and in A.A. itself.
